Reaching Out: Hand Mapping and Poetry Workshop

Saturday, April 17, Session 1

Workshop C: 10:15 - 11:15 AM PST

The workshop follows the theme of reaching out/against carcerality, particularly the binding labels that tend to originate within the law’s definitional power over people. Through a series of reflections on legal labels - both that participants have experienced and perhaps upheld - participants are guided in creating a series of found poems.

The poems provide a point of intervention into which artists, formerly incarcerated persons, lawyers, and activists can unearth their own and each other’s assumptions that keep carcerality lodged in place, and to open up more space for moving into abolitionist futures from the context of carceral hegemony.
