Reimagining Justice: Replacing, Reimagining, and Reclaiming Monuments

Saturday, April 15, session 2

1:30 - 3:00 PM PST

How can the visual arts be used to reimagine racist monuments and build abolitionist memorials that might be used to heal and provide closure to those impacted by trauma from the past? Together, we will explore how communities are reimagining symbols of oppression and have an opportunity to create some of our own artwork through an abolitionist lens.

Throughout this workshop series, participants accomplish the following:

  • Regardless of their background as artist, lawyer, educator, participants will have a

deeper understanding of historical memorials and monuments, through a human rights

    and abolitionist lens.

  • Create individual visual art pieces using different types of mixed media.

  • Build community through short, simple, art-based activities.

  • Have a deeper understanding between human rights, social justice, abolition, and art as

    a tool for reimagining institutions.
